Vinhos Tintos / Red Wines

Bairrada / Northwestern Portugal
Bairrada derives its name from the word "barro", Portuguese for clay. The region's soil is almost exclusively clay, usually mixed with either lime or sand. Lying between OPorto and Lisbon, this region has been producing wines for more than 1000 years, and it is renowned for its austere red wines. Baga, the main grape varietal in the region is known to produce highly tannic and acidic wines. But they develop beautifully in the bottle, resulting in wines that have great complexity and finesse as they age.
Quinta das Bágeiras Reserva 2001 48.00

This typical Bairrada wine is dark ruby-colored and concentrated with a fragrant nose of sweet herbs and cherries which carries through on the palate. Rich and complex, it has plenty of dusty, spicy tannic structure and a peppery finish. Enjoy it with a juicy steak or roasted salt cod. Grape: Baga 100%.

Alfama's Private Selection, Vinho Regional Beiras 2001 50.00

In celebration of Alfama's fifth anniversary, Tarcísio Costa, Alfama's co-owner and wine director, visited with several winemakers in Portugal before choosing a winery he thought to be Alfama's "soul brother": small, independently owned and where the winemaker was passionate about his craft. Most importantly, the wine's flavor profile had to be unapologetically Portuguese. Hence, varietals such as Baga, Água Santa and Tinta Roriz were selected to create a wine of marked personality, exhibiting the terroir of Beira Litoral (central northwestern Portugal), a cool Atlantic climate with sandy soils. Created exclusively for us and estate-bottled at Quinta dos Cozinheiros, Alfama's Private Selection has a fresh vinous nose with vegetal characteristics and notes of black fruit. Matured for 10 months in French Allier oak, it has a rich palate of black cherries and plums. Well structured, with boldly integrated tannins, it offers a pleasant and persistent finish.

Quinta do Poço do Lobo Cabernet Sauvignon 1990 55.00

An elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, exhibiting currant, blackberries and spices on the nose. On the palate, its flavors are currant, spice, black fruit and plums. This wine has balanced tannins and a long finish. Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon 100%.

Luís Pato Vinhas Velhas, Beiras 2001 60.00

Bold and gamey, with earthy, bitter cherry flavors, this "old vine" red is fashioned in a traditional style, with a leathery texture and substantial peppery tannins, supported by intensely concentrated red fruit. Grape: Baga and Touriga Nacional.
