CARM stands for Casa Agrícola Rui Madeira, a relatively new project whose first vintage was 1999. It's a family-owned operation and winemaker Rui Madeira sources grapes from several estates. This wine has a deep ruby color and a subtle nose of cherries, rock rose and a hint of oak. On the palate, it has notes of chocolate and coffee and exhibits marked but pleasant tannins. Medium-bodied, well structured and offering a pleasant finish, it goes well with codfish dishes and sardines. Grapes: Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Roriz.

Created by talented winemaker Anselmo Mendes, this wine can be called "funky," which in this case, is a positive comment. At first, one is overwhelmed by the amount of oak and tannins on the palate. But after allowing the wine to breath for 10 minutes, it opens up beautifully, revealing a delightful complexity. On the nose, it exhibits a ripe herby berry and black fruit, and on the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine has lots of rich black fruit and a spicy finish.
