Vinhos Tintos / Red Wines

Estremadura / North of Lisbon
This region, stretching from Lisbon's hinterland up Portugal's west coast, produces more wine than any other region in Portugal and yet, very few people have heard of it. For many years (it is still the case today) the focus was on quantity, not quality. Estremadura's highly productive vineyards yield tons of anonymous blends that are used for distillation to make grape spirit used to fortify Port or to manufacture Portugal's national brands of Vermouth. But there are exceptions! Some cooperatives and single estates are dedicated to producing wines of quality, carefully monitoring yields, matching grape varietals to soil types, researching distinctive blends and even producing single varietal wines. Today, some Estremdura wines show complexity and finesse.
