Vinhos Tintos / Red Wines

Palmela - Terras do Sado / South of Lisbon
Centered on the fishing port of Setúbal at the mouth of the River Sado, Terras do Sado stretches from the south bank of the river Tagus opposite Lisbon down the Atlantic coast beyond the town of Sines. Most of the vineyards are concentrated in the north of the region on the limestone slopes of the Serra da Arrábida and sandy soils along the northern side of the Sado estuary. The warm, maritime climate is ideal for commercial viticulture and a large number of different grape varieties are grown in the region. The wines vary widely according to the grape variety producing firm fruity reds, occasionally blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. Arinto and Fernão Pires both produce distinctive, well balanced whites. A noteworthy producer is José Maria da Fonseca, who?s known for its delicious Moscatel de Setúbal, a rich, raisiny dessert wine.
J.P. 2003 26.00

This wine is ruby colored, medium bodied with a dominant red fruit aroma and a smooth finish. It may be served slightly chilled and it is the perfect accompaniment to lamb, pastas, most red meats and cheeses. Grape: Periquita (often compared to the Sirah grape).

J.P. Garrafeira 2000 36.00

The word garrafeira means a private stock from an outstanding vintage, which will age extraordinarily well, and only the very best wines are selected ? sometimes once or twice every ten years. This outstanding Garrafeira is the result of 100% Castelão Francês varietal. J.P.Garrafeira is smooth, round with hints of berries, has perfect balance, medium body and soft fruit.

Aliança Palmela Particular 1999 41.00

A full-bodied, deep purple wine, with superb amounts of plums and berries, well-balanced tannins and great structure. It has a long, pleasant finish. Grape: Castelão Francês 100%.

Quinta da Bacalhôa 2001 54.00

The estate of Bacalhôa dates back to the 15th century and is famous for having one of Portugal's most beautiful palaces, known for its outstanding hand-painted decorative tiles. Equally sublime is this medium-dark wine, filled with aromas of grilled nuts, licorice and mocha. Full-bodied, Quinta da Bacalhôa is well balanced with a ripe finish and lingering fruit. Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
