Vinhos Verdes

Minho / Northern Portugal
Minho, Portugal's largest DOC region stretches from the hills south of the river Douro to the River Minho in the North. Vines flourish in this relatively cool, damp maritime climate with granite soil and give rise to Vinho Verde. But is the wine green? Not at all! The grapes used in its production are picked early. Therefore, they are still "verde," which means not fully ripe. That is done on purpose, so that the resulting wine will have lower alcohol content. The one exception is the wines are made from 100% Alvarinho, the noble grape varietal in the region. Alvarinho wines can be full-bodied and exhibit rich, complex palates. But in general, Vinhos Verdes are lighter, refreshing, possessing a crisp, fruity character and are bottled with a slight pétillance or sparkle. They are delicious by themselves or as an accompaniment to seafood dishes and salads.
Casal Mendes 2005 23.00

This wine has an elegant aroma, carefully balanced with a light acidity and suggesting a perfume of lilac, honey and fruit. Its flavor is round and dry on the palate with a nice crisp taste. Recommended with fish, seafood and salads or spicy dishes. Grapes: Loureiro and Trajadura.

Gazela 2005 25.00

This light, delicate wine has a bouquet of lemons and apricots. Renowned for its sparkle on the tongue, its bright acidity balances the subtle fruitiness and medium sweetness. Enjoy it as an appéritif or as accompaniment to light dishes. Grapes: Loureiro (very aromatic), Azal, Pedernã and Trajadura.

Varanda do Conde 2004 28.00

A combination of two varietals, this fragrant wine has nut and nectarine flavors with hints of citrus. Light and refreshing, it pairs well with light cheeses, salads and fresh fish. Grapes: Alvarinho and Trajadura.

Quinta da Pedra, 2003 30.00

A plethora of flavors best describes this wine. From orange zest to peppermint, it also possesses hints of nuts. Well balanced and refreshing, it can be compared to a Chablis and is an enjoyable accompaniment to seafood. Grape: Alvarinho 100%.

Morgadio da Torre 2003 37.00

A wonderfully crisp pot of gold, this wine has an intense fruit aroma, reminiscent of the Riesling grape, with considerable body and depth. It pairs well with seafood, poultry and lighter dishes. Grape: Alvarinho 100%.

Portal do Fidalgo 2004 39.00

This estate-bottled "Alvarinho" is a clean, fresh, crispy, zesty and beautifully balanced young wine. It has a fragrant and delicate nose with flavors of nut and nectarine - it pairs well with fish, shellfish, and poultry. Grape: Alvarinho 100%.

Adega de Monção's Deu Lá Deu 2004 42.00

This clear pale, straw-colored Alvarinho has a rich floral nose with notes of peach skins, apples and lime. Medium to full-bodied and with crisp acidity, it has delightful minerality and a palate of apples and peaches. Grape: Alvarinho 100%.

Soalheiro 2005 44.00

This clear, medium straw-colored Alvarinho is most unusual due to its rather herbal, grassy and complex nose. In a blind tasting, one would almost think it a Sauvignon Blanc. But after airing out a bit longer, its nose reveals itself rich with tropical aromas of passion fruit and pineapple that come through with a delightful hint of minerality. The palate is unctuous and shows great complexity, with notes of peach, leading to persistent finish. Grape: Alvarinho 100%.

Muros Antigos 2004 45.00

Luscious is the best word to describe this Alvarinho - full bodied, with a complex and intense nose of exotic and tropical fruits (lichee, green apples and honeysuckle) which are also reflected on the palate, leading a long, delicious finish. Grape: Alvarinho 100%.

Palácio da Brejoeira 2004 60.00

Produced in the renowned region of Monção under the strictest supervision, this prestigious wine is made from a carefully hand picked selection of the rare estate-grown Alvarinho grape. The result is a wine of great character and complexity. On the nose it exhibits aromas of apricots and flowers and on the palate, apples and nectarine. Grape: Alvarinho 100%.
